First month back to school is in the books! PRSSA had a great turn out for our first general meeting, as well as many returning members from the previous fall semester. We have some interesting club events planned for this semester and once they’re finalized we will post them up on here and our other social media platforms. PRSSA also had it’s traditional Beach Kick-Off Social at Magic Island this year which was a success. Thanks to everyone who came to our first general meeting and kick off social!
This semester, one thing we are shooting to accomplish is to use our social media applications more frequently, to help keep members updated and connected.

Spring Break is coming to an end, and so is the month of March. That just means a month and a half more till school ends! We’re almost there to summer, hang in guys! Before you all gush in excitement, here is March updates:
We kick started the month of with a professional development workshop with Gene Park and Melissa Chang, who are both well-known in Hawaii. They are very familiarized with the social networks used today that they helped construct big named companies- Gene Park with Civil Beat and Melissa Chang with AdStreamz. If you look at their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, you can tell they are very popular amongst the Hawaii crowd. Go check them out at @genepark and @melissa808 Of course, what better way to end a workshop with an #oscarselfie !
We also had a fundraiser event with Panda Express where by showing the “fundraiser event form” 20% of your total amount will be given to the club. We enjoyed receiving all your delicious pictures of your meals! If you haven’t done so yet, you can still email us to receive your points accredited to active status. Hope you enjoyed this easy and delicious fundraiser!
The community service event for March was held for the HI Meth Project. Members participated in a creative workshop where they all shared their ideas on how to promote the project. They all brainstormed and put their PR brains to work that HI Meth committee asked to send in your ideas to them! Awesome job guys!
So that completes the updates for this month! April will definitely have a lot more events so please check your emails or Facebook to stay up to date! Thanks for reading :)
PRSSA members woke up early to volunteer at the Great Aloha Run. For about three hours, they passed out water to oncoming runners and cheered them to uplift their spirits. Despite being tired and cold, the members kept motivated and made sure to keep the runners hydrated!
This month’s social consisted of a Scavenger Hunt around town. The four committees separated into two teams: Red Team- Public Relations and Fundraising & Green Team- Community Service and Professional Development. The hunt lead them to places such as Koko Head, Iolani Palace, the Honolulu Zoo and other significant areas here in Hawaii. After roaming around town for over three hours, the committees met up at the final destination: Kua’aina. Feeling accomplished, they chowed down over some delicious burgers!
Kick-Off Week for Spring 2014 has been a huge success! The eBoard has been going into Communication, Journalism, Marketing, Business, and Communicology classes to recruit new members. It was a great turn out for the Kick-Off Meeting which was held on January 28th where we introduced the eBoard and passed along important information and events for this new semester. PRSSA also bought some delicious pizza for everyone to munch on when the meeting adjourned. With this rainy season among us, amazingly the showers were kept away to hold up our Kick-Off Social on February 2nd. As tradition, this event is held at Magic Island. With blue skies and a bit of some trade winds, the day turned out perfect with some lunch and games!
To get to know one another, we first played a game of “Name & Animal Sounds” where we sit along a circle and one starts with their name followed by an animal sound. Now when you’re walking around campus and you see a fellow member you can shout out their animal sound! Of course, that might be a little embarrassing so maybe do it discretely. After a couple more rounds of other games, we ended our day with bringing in our hands together and cheering on “PRSSA on 3!”
Time has definitely flown by quickly! Here’s to a new semester where once again we will be welcoming new and returning members. Four new individuals has joined the eBoard team, and along with their fellow officers, they are excited to kick off this spring semester!

Account Supervisor at McNeil Wilson, David Pettinger, gave PRSSA his personal experience working in public relations.
Thanksgiving BBQ Social November 23, 2013
A fun-filled day at the beach is just what PRSSA needed this month, to get together and cool off before finals. Kailua Beach Park made a great place to have our upbeat members be themselves and play several rounds of the popular “Heads Up” app for iPhone, a couple games of volleyball, have a mini photo shoot, and chow down on some BBQ and potluck items.
Throughout the semester you are given the opportunity to attend professional development workshops from various PR professionals from your own community. Once every year in the Fall semester, chapters around the country are invited to attend the PRSSA National Conference (PRSSANC). PRSSANC brought four of our members Nikki Atienza, Raelyn Batacan, Deanna Directo, and Ismael “Izzy” Ma to the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for five days filled with networking and professional development that enriched their knowledge in the world PR.
At the same time of PRSSANC, the Public Relations Society of America also held their own International Conference (PRSAICON) across the street. PRSSA members were welcome to attend PRSAICON general sessions. Sessions at PRSSANC covered an array of topics:
- Student Run Firms
- CEO of You: Personal Branding
- Cookies to Cracker: Food PR
- Living Legends of PR
- Work-Life Fit
- F.A.M.E. PR
- Entertainment PR: Warner Bros.
- Sports PR
- and more…
Time off of conference were spent roaming the city of Philadelphia, taking photos, discovering the many historical sites, and tasting the best food Philly has to offer. Thank you Izzy for capturing these amazing photos. See more work of Ismael Ma’s Photography here.
Bubbies Mochi Ice Cream is one of the most popular fundraisers here on campus at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. With a Bubbies ice cream polar down University Ave there’s always an organization on campus pre selling their tickets to students, staff and family members. Every semester our fundraising director coordinates another Bubbies fundraiser and we’ve made it another big success. A big thank you to Bubbies for helping us out once again!
What are two things that bring people together? Food and Karaoke. Monday members got together on October 7 for a night dedicated to singing their hearts out over a potluck styled dinner. SInging songs by Britney Spears, Disney classics, and Bohemian Rhapsody, everyone was in on all the fun. Krazy Karaoke also offers discounts for students on Monday!
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC)
PRSSA volunteers for numerous organizations and MSABC is one of them. Waking up just before sunrise to help out with the run, PRSSA dedicated their time as guides for runners and walkers of all ages throughout the course. PRSSA members also acted as motivators for participants during the run.
New and returning members came together Saturday Morning to clean up litter at Waikiki Beach specifically near the Waikiki Aquarium. After a few hours, we’ve collected various items including 350 cigarette buds, bottle caps, and even a seringe. Toward the ending of our clean up we were rewarded with cookies and a free pass to the Waikiki Aquarium which we used shortly after, as a mini field trip with PRSSA. After visiting the jellyfish, colorful fish, and frogs we made our way for lunch at South Shore Grill.
